Abstract:
In recent years, non-spherical and composite polymeric particles with special morphologies and their preparation methods have attracted the attention of scientific community all around the world, which is because of their interesting properties. Several techniques have been developed to prepare these structured particles, among which Seeded dispersion polymerization has many advantages compared with the others. In this work seeded dispersion polymerization of styrene carried out in the presence of poly (n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA), poly (lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) seed particles. Since the morphology of the particles that have been produced with seeded dispersion polymerization is not thermodynamically stable, their morphology can change when the circumstances are favorable. Solvent absorbing-releasing method was used to provide these conditions and reconstruct the morphology of PMMA/PS composite particles. The effect of weight ratio of the two constituent polymers on the final morphology of particles was examined, and it was shown that onion-like PMMA/PS particles will be formed if these polymers have similar contents in the final particles.
