Abstract:

Peat is in the category of problematic soils due to its low shear strength and high compressibility. The useof additives to improve the geotechnical properties of peat has been reported. This paper describes theeffect of cement kiln dust (CKD) as an additive to improve the geotechnical properties of Urmia peat.CKD was added to Urmia peat by 10, 20, and 30 % of dry weight of peat and the mixed material was letto cure for 7, 14, and 28 days. The samples of cured stabilized peat with CKD were tested for theirmaximum dry density, optimum moisture content, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), PH, andAtterberg limits. The results showed that in addition to other geotechnical properties, the unconfinedcompressive strength, stiffness, and compressibility of the peat were remarkably improved. The resultsindicate that cement kiln dust is a suitable additive to peat to improve its geotechnical properties. Thismethod of soil improvement is recommended for light weight structures constructed on peat.
