Abstract:

Tephrosia purpurea belonging to family Leguminosae, and the genus Tephrosia comprises between 300 to 400 species of annual and perennial woody herb, distributed in tropical and subtropical and arid regions of the world. It is an erect or spreading annual herb, distributed widely in south of Baluchistan (Sarbaz, Rask, Chabhar) and other countries like China, India, Sri Lanka, Malay Peninsula and Hawaii. It is an important component of some preparationssuch as Tephroli and Yakrifit used for liver disorders. It is also used as bitter, astringent, acrid, thermogenic, anthelmic, digestive, laxative, diuretic, uterine tonic and anti-inflammatory Internally it is used as a blood purifier, in the treatment of bronchitis, boils, pimples, bleeding piles; kidney disorders. This plant have high economic value due to the presence of phytochemicals like flavonoids, alkaloids, carbohydrates, tannins and phenols, gums and mucilage, fixed oils and fats and saponins and lipids. Flavonoids have antioxidants and they have strong antimicrobial activity.
