Abstract:

Liquefaction is a common problem in earthquake prone zones where loose saturated soil deposits exist. A number of different densification techniques have been developed to mitigate liquefaction in loose saturated granular soils. Dynamic compaction is among the most field proven and commonly used techniques, specially for the regions that the land has gained from the sea. The study of dynamic compaction and diverse influenced factors with the physical modeling of loose sand has been undertaken using physical modelling and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method. Tamping was executed by raising and dropping semi-cylindrical steel tampers on the surface of loose sand deposit by repeating the process for different combinations of tampers, applied energy intensity and number of drops. The effect of dynamic compaction on liquefaction remediation has been evaluated. Accurate measurement of soil deformation is fundamental to the success of geotechnical modeling. One of the methods that has received a great attention in recent years because of numerous benefits is the use of digital images processing. The most important factor in this regards was the pattern of soil densification and density change in depth. Some relations between applied energy, contact stress, influenced depth and liquefaction potential has been discussed.
