Abstract:

Cooling with phase change is an attractive option for heat dissipation in high power electronic systems. Over the past three decades, researchers have investigated different passive enhancement techniques to increase the heat transfer coefficient and the critical heat flux (CHF). They have used different working fluids, e.g., water, aqueous surfactant solutions, refrigerants, alcohols, binary mixtures, and more recently nanofluids in pool boiling systems. In this study, saturated nucleate pool boiling of aqueous surfactant solutions at low concentrations on a horizontal cylindrical heater has been experimentally investigated. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, is employed. Effects of both of SDS concentration, and the excess temperature ΔT on heat transfer performance are studied. The experimental results have shown that the addition of limited amounts of sodium dodecyl sulfate to the cooling water improves its physical and thermal properties and in turn improves the heat transfer coefficient up to 125%. Also a new model for the prediction of heat transfer coefficient for aqueous SDS solution is proposed, which predicts the experimental data with a satisfactory accuracy.
