Abstract:

It is well known that the mode of deformation, i.e., simple shear or pure shear has significant effects on the formation of ultrafine grained structure in severe plastic deformation (SPD). In this study, AA1050 and AA6063 alloys are deformed using a new SPD technique, i.e., pure shear extrusion (PSE). In contrast to most of SPD processes in which the deformation mode is simple shear, in this process, the material is deformed in pure shear. The homogeneity of the deformation as a key factor in SPD processes is investigated by considering the fraction of the exit channel of the die which is filled in after PSE and hardness distribution. The effect of the composition of the material on the fraction of filling and hardness is investigated by PSE deformation of AA1050 and AA6063 aluminum alloys aimed at acquiring the highest fraction of filling and homogenous deformation. It is found that by changing the material from AA1050 to AA6063, the fraction of filling increases. However, the increase in average hardness decreases and its distribution becomes more uniform which indicates the occurrence of a more homogeneous deformation
