Theoretical and Finite Element Analysis of Upsetting Process Considering the Effect of Work Piece Geometry

One of the prevalent metal forming processes is upsetting. This procedure is performed by a high amount of pressure that is applied on the work piece and causes an increase in section area and decrease in thickness. Several methods can be suggested to investigate this process including theoretical and numerical solutions. In this paper, upsetting process is analyzed through three different methods. These distinguished solutions consist of theoretical method, numerical analysis by means of ABAQUS software, and also numerical method via SPID code. The results of these investigations are analyzed for three different ratios of thickness to width. Moreover, a comparison between the parameters that are affecting the upsetting process is performed. At last, the effect of friction between the surface of the work piece and that of the die is investigated
