Abstract:

In order to understand the characters and working principles of off-grid-connected wind turbine, this paper focuses on the modeling and simulation of a three bladed, variable-speed wind turbine system with considering of wind shear and tower shadow effects. The turbine static characteristics are modeled using the relation between the turbine power versus the wind speed and the blade pitch angle. According to the structure of the wind turbine, a theoretical model is presented, including three subsystems: rotor, drive train system and generator. It is shown that the tower shadow effect is more dominant than the wind shear effect in determining the dynamic torque, although there is a small DC reduction in the torque oscillation due to wind shear. The main content of the model is the performance coefficient Cp derived from Data collected on the Binalood wind farm. Then the proposed model is suitable for real-time simulation of wind turbine in power systems
