Abstract:
In this study, the effect of liquid and air flow rates on gas hold up, mixing time, residence time, as well as on gas-liquid mass transfer coefficients were studied in a 3 liter loop bioreactor (H=0.4m, L=2.3m, and D=0.03m) designed for production of SCP from natural gas. Also, measurement of the volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kla) was done using a dynamic method. It was observed from the experimental results that liquid and air flow rates have a remarkable effect on kla. The effect is due to their influence on gas hold up, mixing time and residence time, consequently affecting on the amount of kla. Variation of liquid flow rate ranged from 10 to 20 l/min and air flow rate ranged from 0.5 to 2.5 l/min, caused a variation of kla from 0.002 to .015 s-1 for oxygen. The volumetric methane mass transfer coefficient is calculated, too. In these experiments, gas hold up reached to the values up to 0.125. Mixing time and residence time were experimented separately.
