Abstract:

Fluoride is one of the anionic contaminants which is found in excess in surface or groundwater because of geochemical reactions or anthropogenic activities such as the disposal of industrial wastewaters.Among various methods used for defluoridation of water such as coagulation, precipitation, membrane processes, electrolytic treatment, ion-exchange, the adsorption process is widely used.In this study porous carbon was prepared by use of furfuryl alcohol as precursor and clinoptilolite as template..The synthesized carbon porous was characterized and then activated by liquid phase oxidation using HNO3 solution.The adsorbent was then used for removal of fluoride ions from aqueous solutions under different experimental conditions.It was concluded that the adsorbent possessed high adsorption capacity compared to the other studied adsorbents. The regeneration of the adsorbent was also examined with different eluents. Under optimized conditions, the adsorbent retained its original capacity after seven regeneration cycles.
