Abstract:

The present study investigates dynamic loading response of marble rock, as a widely used geomaterial in civil constructions, buildings and curbstones. To reach this goal, Charpy impact test as a three-point dynamic loading instrument was employed in order to derive the values of energy absorption of U-shaped notch specimens. Afterwards, numerical modeling based on experimental results was developed using ABAQUS finite element code to replicate the experimental outcomes. The numerical modeling results exhibited a good agreement with those of experimental. Having calibrated the numerical simulation, the effects of the two main features of Charpy impact test, namely velocity of impact and pendulum mass on the energy absorption values were numerically investigated and compared. It was found that the velocity of impact was among the most effective factors in components of Charpy impact apparatus
