Abstract:
Strong earthquakes induce high amount of energy to the affected structures. Most structures are subjected to vibrations due to wind forces, earthquake excitation, machine vibrations, or many other sources. The bracing frame systems are one of the most commonly used methods to resist lateral loads, especially during an earthquake. According to the recent research, off-center bracing was introduced as an alternative expedient to enhance the seismic performance of framed structures. In this lateral system the tensile diagonal strut is not straight. Once the load is applied, the initial geometry changes and therefore, this lateral system enter into a nonlinear region. The current paper tries to evaluate nonlinear behavior and the reduction factor in off-center braced frames with different position of the midpoint. For that matter, three multi story frames equipped with off-center braces with different position of midpoint were considered during the course of study. A nonlinear static analysis has been developed to study the nonlinear behavior of off-center bracing systems (OBS). The results indicate that the reduction factor of off-center steel braced frames increases with getting away of the midpoint from beam-column connection.
