Abstract:

Critical pedagogy as a teaching approach attempts to help students question and challenge domination, and the beliefs and practices that dominate in order to motivate the learners to be more successful language achievers. Consequently, this study is focused on the impact of the critical pedagogy on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' reading comprehension. In this study, 54 students were randomly and equally assigned to the experimental and controlgroups (27 students in each group). To see the impact of critical pedagogy on EFL learners' reading comprehension, reading comprehension test in form of multiple choice and some open ended questions were used as a pre – test and post – test to assess the participants’ reading comprehension in both control and experimental group. The results revealed that the critical approach to the teaching of reading leads to a better comprehension of the text. In this way, learners develop a deeper understanding of their social environment, their histories, and themselves.
