In the article diagnosis problem as the main issue has been investigated and as instance of diagnostics issues, medical diagnosis has been researched. Usable and unusable mathematical principles have been analyzed in the next step. To show the function of these mathematical principles in reasoning cycle of each expert system, causal-covering method has been investigated. This method analyses the function of inference engine in expert systems.Introduction: Nowadays expert systems are a part of artificial intelligence so they help a lot and are efficient. Expert systems rely on proficiency of specialists and accuracy of computer, improve the quality of decisions. On the other hand diagnosis-based issues are used by expert systems widely. Causal-covering method for solving the issue has been shown. Function of the inference engine based on causal-covering method has been explained. This determined diagnosis was actually one of the competing diagnoses.
