Impact of BASNEF model educational program on body mass index, nutritional behavior and physical activity of obese students

Abstract:

Obesity and overweight are widely known as predicament not only because of its harmful has physiological affected also, its negative effect on quality of life. One of the facets that cause this issue is adolescents’ attitude toward behavior in high school adolescents' nutritional patterns and physical activities. Education can enhance adolescents’ attitude and prevents from this problem. The aim of this study is to evaluate alterations in adolescent's attitude toward behavior, behavioral self-administration using BASNEF model. METHODS: This study was a semi-experimental with pre-test, post test and follow up design. Fifty-one overweight/obese age16.4 ± 0.57 year olds high school adolescents participated in this study. Sampling was based on multistage cluster random sampling method. The questions in this study were standardized through content validity in pretest, post-test and follow up stages, aiming to change sedentary behavior, physical activity, and diet using behavior change counseling and other outcomes was weight change. RESULTS: Evaluating the pretest, post-test and follow up scores revealed a statistically significant difference in the attitude toward behavior average score. The results of this study recommend that attitude toward behavior and self-administration following the intention about dietary patterns can be enhanced through adolescents’ education by BASNEF model for instance belief, subjective norm enabling factor and self-administration. Weight gain was reduced significantly in the intervention group compared to the control group (1.3 kg vs. 1.9 kg, respectively, t- test p<0.010). CONCLUSIONS: With the intention have been healthy adolescents should develop their attitude toward behavior about how they encourage their self-administration adolescent's dietary pattern and physical activities. Treatment was associated with reduce rate of weight gain, and improvement in physical activity and lifestyle changes. Consequently, new model of education can optimize appropriate healthy behavior
