Abstract:
Plasma actuator causes ionization of the surrounding air through applying a strong electric field which creates a net body force, referred to as plasma induced momentum. Due to the availability, easy installation, lack of maintenance, fast dynamic response, low electric power consumption and high reliability, actuators are being considered as a new method for active flow control. In this study, ability of plasma actuator to produce a fluid jet at the wall is examined. In order to achieve this idea, the boundary layer on the wall is analysed numerically with the presence of a plasma actuator. The results show that when plasma actuator is turned on, the air around the electrode is ionized and accelerated from exposed electrode to the covered electrode. The momentum of ionized air (plasma) is transferred to the surrounding air and a jet flow is produce near the wall where the maximum velocity of jet flow is approximately 4.18 m/s.
