Abstract:
The effects of air and water on deterioration of asphalt mixtures, known as durability, continue to present a challenge. The action of water and water vapor may cause moisture damage, including a reduction in mixture stiffness and stripping of the binder from the aggregate. A reduction in cohesion results in a reduction in strength and stiffness. The loss of adhesion is the physical separation of the asphalt cement and aggregate, primarily caused by moisture. Additives have been developed to address the issues of poor pavement performance and high maintenance costs experienced by moisture susceptible pavements. These anti-stripping additives are used to promote adhesion of asphalt cement onto the aggregate surface. In this study the use of hydrated lime, Portland cement, and liquid anti stripping agents were evaluated for the specimens prepared with one type of bitumen widely used and available in Iran. Different laboratory tests were conducted to study the effect of these additives on i ncreasing the durability of mixtures.
