Saving energy is a serious challenge in wireless sensor networks. Accordingly, algorithms designed to operate in these networks must meet the requirements of efficiency with respect to energy consumption. One fundamental strategy to reduce energy consumption in wireless sensor networks is clustering. There are numerous ways to select cluster-heads. The present paper is innovative in its use of centralized segmentation at the sink and distributed fuzzy logic in each node to form the clusters. Since we have benefited from segmentation and clustering, we propose hybrid clustering method. Segmentation and fuzzy logic are employed to specify the number of clusters and the selection of cluster-heads respectively. Contrary to other methods, in the present one first the cluster, and then the cluster-heads are selected. When compared to other clustering algorithms, it will be shown that the proposed method has a better performance with respect to minimizing energy consumption and maximizing network lifetime.
