Abstract:

In present paper, finite element method is employed for strain and stress analysis of a diesel engine block. In the field of designing and manufacturing internal combustion engines, in addition to performance parameters and efficiency, the engine block is also critical in terms of mechanical and thermal strengths. Circumstance of forces distribution determines life of the engine in short-term and long-term. This point is the most important parameter which specifies materials type and manufacturing procedures of the engine components. In present research a 16-cylinder diesel engine of EMD-645 in terms of stress distribution and strength of the engine block has been numerically studied. For this purpose, operating condition of the engine has been extracted using finite element analysis. Combustion pressure and the forces applied on the bearing housings were separately calculated and are used in the numerical simulation. Numerical results are presented to serve as benchmarks for future researches of diesel engines.
