In this paper, a 2D JavaFoil and a 3D CFD model of Inlet Guide Vanes (IGVs), and first stage rotating and stator blades of an axial compressor are investigated to determine the critical rotor speed under different IGVs setting angles at which stall occurs on the blades. In this respect, the critical attack angle of the stall onset is determined using the JavaFoil simulation results for the hub, middle and tip sections of the rotor blades. Consequently, relationship between IGVs setting angle and rotational speed at stall point is determined. To evaluate the accuracy of the predicted critical rotor conditions, the IGVs setting angle of 34 degree (the setting angle which is used at the beginning of the compressor start up) is simulated by a commercial CFD package under different rotational speeds. The CFD simulations show that the stall occurs exactly at the predicted rotor speed. Therefore, the accuracy of the extracted diagram is verified.
