Abstract:

Microbial behavior and characteristics of saline wastewater have been investigated in this study. Two SBR reactors with different initial biomass and varied NaCl and COD concentration were operated. Inboth reactors, COD were gradually increased to 3000 mg/l, whereas NaCl increased to 10000 mg/l,respectively. The average COD reduction in the first reactor (R1) and the second reactor (R2) were 96% and 95 %, respectively. The kinetic coefficients Ks (mg/l sCOD), kd (gVSS/gVSS.d), k (gsCOD/gVSS.d)and Y (mgVSS/mg sCOD) in the first reactor were 145, 0.072, 2.23 and 0.39 and the correspondingvalues for the second reactor were 195, 0.025, 2.29 and 0.45, respectively. The estimated value of kd for saline wastewater is lower than that for salt free wastewater, while, ks is higher. The bacteria community in saline wastewater uses some mechanism that stimulates the obligatory energy-dependent reactions which affect the kinetic coefficients such as Ks
