Abstract:
Ionic polymer free metal composite (IPFMC) actuators were fabricated with nanocomposite of Vulcan XC-72R carbon, multi walled carbon nanotube (VM) and electro polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy) as electrode thus avoiding the costly and rigidly platinum electrodes. After spraying of VM ink on both sides of Nafion membrane, VM- coated Nafion membrane was applied as working electrode in anelectrochemical cell for electro- polymerization of pyrrole. Polypyrrole films have been oxidized by flow of a constant anodic current (CHP method) in lithium chloride (LiCl) and Lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) electrolytes, forming a three layer bending actuator. The effect of electrolyte type was followed using physicochemical, electrochemical and electromechanical measurements and was compared with thecorresponding behavior of Pt electrode- based IPMC actuators. Morphology analysis of IPFMCs showed monotonous electrode structures and clarified the dependency of PPy films morphology on the electrolyte type in the electro-polymerization. A more porosity electrode structure was formed in actuator prepared by LiCl electrolyte. The prepared PPy films by LiCl electrolyte resulted in dramatic increases in thewater uptake potential (WUP) and ion exchange capacity (IEC) of the actuator and also in the capacitance, ionic conduction and in the tip displacement of the IPFMC actuator. The small tip displacement and WUP of actuator prepared by LiCl electrolyte were 1.9 and 1.3times higher than that of prepared by LiClO4 electrolyte, respectively. The large tip displacement of prepared metal free actuators was 17 mm which nearly close to the conventional Pt electrode- based IPMC actuators (23 mm)
