Abstract:

In the last few years, development of Iranian central field zones is under research as candidates of sequestering, gas storage projects and utilization of these stored gases in cold seasons. Thereupon drilling operations commenced to investigate the ability of performance of this theory. Although a few wells are drilled in this field, some hole problems disturbed the drilling crew that in some wells lead tolose of the well. Objective of this paper is to simulate a section of one of the deviated wells for the problems by use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and analyze by a computer program to investigate the causes of encountered problems and the failure of the operations, which urged the burden of heavy and expensive costs due to NPT times. A 12 m of hole section of 215.9 mm diameter with 62 deginclination and pipe rotation (RPM) of zero and 90 simulated and analyzed by CFD. Results shows pipe rotating is effective for hole cleaning and when RPM is zero concentration of cuttings in lower section is more significant. Creating more annular velocities can reduce cutting accumulations and risk of pipe stuck either. Finally, the offered solutions of overcoming these problems and investigation of whetherthese solutions are beneficial or worsen the situation are presented in conclusion section.
