The Theory of Using RTU in Smart Grids and Micro grids

The concurrent power distribution grids are being superseded by the future generations of smart grids and micro grids, for implementation of which, numerous approaches have been discussed and investigated. In this paper, key features of RTUs applied in smart grids are introduced as well as major prerequisites of SCADA systems. Hardware and software required facilities of RTUs such as energy metering, telecommunication infrastructures, protection operations, communication protocols, data base development and electromagnetic compatibility are discussed. The outlined series of specifications are in accordance with micro grids and smart grids requirements in order to present a comprehensive theory of RTU interconnections in the future generations of power distribution systems
