Abstract:

The Traffic signal is ultimate form of control at intersections. It is employed to reduce number and nature of conflict at intersections and if it is designed and timed efficiently, itresults in intersection capacity increase. Delay is a measure of effectiveness of an intersection. This study is to introduce an approach to establish relationship between delay at signalized intersection and its parameters such as total volumes, length of cycle, numberof phases, volume to capacity ratio, average speed, number of stops for each vehicle at the intersection, and average stopped-time delay. Valiasr street was selected as a case study and, according to the developed model using regression and poisson regression model, it was found that impact of volume to capacity ratio and average stopped-time on delay is not significant. With the proposed method, delay can be estimated and level of service of an intersection can be determined.
