Abstract:

The dramatic growth of urbanization consequent to a rise in transport fleet resulted in increase of vehicular fuel demand especially in Developing Countries (DCs) and aspredicted, it will continue to till 2050. Availability of interactive tools enabling realistic interpretation of energy consumption in transportation sector, along with assessment ofpollution and its direct impact on citizen’s health, have motivated planners to achieve actual smart cities with accurate measurement tools. Home interview survey (HIS) and various data collection methods have been proven as most efficient although, they are costly and time consuming processes for planners. Thereare not enough mechanism for checking accuracy of these data collection processes. Also itis worth mentioning that such data collection processes need to be further continued for updating and validating the models as per the current practice. Thus, the validity assessmentof these revealed preference surveys in transportation planning is often a complicated task.In this study, use of data collected through fuel smart card system in updating Travel Demand Forecasting Modeling (TDFM) process has been proposed. This fuel smart carddata coupled with other information technologies can provide an innovative alternative replacement to the traditional time consuming transportation planning surveys. It is found, in this study, that the number of trips computed based on the fuel consumption data is verymuch matching with the ones reported from traditional home interview survey data. Moreover, there is also strong correlation between the trip productions and the corresponding zonal fuel consumption.
