In this paper vortex induced vibration of an elastically mounted circular cylinder is numerically simulated and the effect of mass ratio on the amplitude and frequency response of the cylinder is investigated. A vortex method is implemented to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. Reynolds number ranges from 90 to 170, a regime that is fully laminar. There is an acceptable agreement between the present numerical results and previous experimental data. Numerical results predict that a decrease in mass ratio will result in an increase in the amplitude, while it will also cause an increase in the reduced velocity range over which lock-in occurs. These changes are not linear with respect to variation in mass ratio.
