Abstract:

Mountain and paradise, macro and micro-enclosure, wall and court, and the thresholds that define them, are the subjects of this essay, which stresses the role of the Zagros chain in phenomenologically defining the Iranian plateau, and that cosmic landscape of the region as characterised by Norberg-Schulz. Cyrus’s stepped tomb at Pasargad, and the crenellations of Persepolis, point to the longstanding symbolic and geo-physical import of the themes of mountain and sacred grove in the Near-East. These majestic mountain ranges of Iran have been described as ‘macroscale walls defining spaces of vast dimensions’. As wider context to this Iranian sense of cosmic space we look also at the Sultanate of Oman which shares some of the geo-physical features of Iran, both in the space-defining role of its mountain ranges and the hydrology of the aflāj waterchannel system - akin to the that of the qanāt. Finally, the paper draws on research conducted in Esfahan, to examine the spatial sequences and thresholds in the Dardasht quarter of that city. Paper and presentation utilise a spectrum of imagery – with a focus on hand-drawn, ‘on-the-spot’ material – that aims to capture those experiential qualities of the transitions from mountain-macrocosm to courtyard-microcosm examined herein .
