Abstract:
Nowadays self-healing ceramic coatings containing corrosion inhibitor such as inorganic inhibitor (cerium) or organic inhibitor (Benzotriazole) are sustainable alternatives to chromate coatings. They protect metals such as aluminum 2024 against corrosive media particularly chlorine solutions. In the present work, alumina-based self-healing coatings containing different amounts of healing agent such as 1.8% and 3.6% and 5.4% was applied on Al2024 via sol gel method. Phase, structural, morphological and nanomechanical properties of the coatings have been evaluated by means of GIXRD, FESEM, nanoindentation and nanoscratch test, respectively. Results show homogeneity and uniformity of the coatings and improvement in corrosion behavior of aluminum by increase in amount of Benzotriazole. Formation of a compound with appropriate ductility and hardness in the optimum concentration of Benzotriazole in 3.6% was observed. This compound prevented formation and propagation of microcracks
