Abstract:

Earthquake is one of the most catastrophic natural disasters to affect human. One of the criticalissues after an earthquake is building damage assessment. The area, amount, rate, and type of thedamage are essential information for rescue, umanitarian and reconstruction operations in thedisaster region. Remote sensing data and techniques play an important role in obtaining buildingdamage nformation because of their non-contact, low cost, wide field of view, and fast responsecapacities. Nowadays that more and diverse types of remote sensing data and imagery becomeavailable, various methods are designed and reported for earthquake-induced building damageassessment. This paper provides a comprehensive review of these methods in two categories: 1-multi-temporal techniques that evaluate the changes between the pre- and post- earthquake dataand 2- mono-temporal techniques that interpret only the post- earthquake data. Both categoriesof methods are discussed and evaluated in terms of the type of remote sensing data utilized, including optical, LiDAR and SAR data.
