Effect of reaction time on properties of sulfonated polyehtersulfone

In this paper, polyethersulfone (PES) is sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid and its properties are analyzed. The sulfonation reaction is conducted at room temperature and the degree of sulfonation is controlled by varying reaction time. The membranes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and measuring water uptake and ion exchange capacity (IEC). These membranes can be considered as excellent candidates suitable for water desalination by electrodialysis.
