Abstract:
Periodontitis is one of the most aggressive chronic inflammatory oral diseases and a usual oral health defect in adults The disease pull away gums from the teeth and form pockets that become infected. Bacterial toxins and the body s response to infection start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If left untreated, thebones, gums and connective tissue that support the teeth are destroyed, which in turn can results in to tooth loss. Theprimary goal of periodontal therapy is the prevention of periodontal disease progression. In achieving periodontal health in chronic periodontitis beside conventional therapy, local antimicrobial agents is used, which they can produce encouraging results. Developing a controlled-release delivery system for quick treatment of periodontal infections is so important. For reaching this aim, we prepared core–shell nanofibers with the shell of PLGA which gum tragacanth and tetracycline hydrochloride were encapsulated in it as the core part. The chemical and mechanicalproperties of the electrospun scaffolds and the drug release properties in long time were evaluated. These nanofiberswith low burst release showed sustained drug release which prolonged for more than 2 months which can be so useful for treatment of periodontal diseases
