Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to discover the relationship between the listening skill and overall English language ability among English translation students at Payam-e -Nour University. For thispurpose, 044 EFL university undergraduate translation students at Payam-e-Nour University wereadministered IELTS Listening Test. According to the students’ responses to the test, they were divided into two groups of high-skilled and low-skilled participants regarding to their listeningskill. 134 volunteers in each group were chosen to conduct a Nelson English Language Proficiency Test (Fowler & Coe 1791). The results showed that listening was positively and effectively related to the development and understanding of a foreign language. It was found thatthere was a statistically significant relationship between the improvement of listening skill and understanding a foreign language among English translation students of Payam-e-Nour University. Results of this study have implications for language learners encouraging them to become more conscious, autonomous, and evaluative about their language as a beneficial learning tool using listening skill to achieve higher learning proficiency in the language.
