Abstract:

A Smart (or intelligent) well is a non-conventioal well equipped with down hole sensors and valves for inflow control installed on the production tubing. The objective of this paper was to make an overview on smart well technology application benefits. Such wells allow for the continuous monitoring of fluid flow rates and pressures and the periodic adjustment of downhole valves. These wells hold great promise for improved oil production. Smart wells enable a quick reaction to unexpected events during the life of a reservoir, and have the potential to positively influence the net present value (NPV) of a project development. The benefits of smart wells have been demonstrated in practical applications, especially for multiple reservoirs where commingled production is the main production strategy. The value of smart wells can result from reduced intervention costs, reduced or delayed production of undesired fluids, and accelerated or increased production of desired fluids.
