The present paper concentrates on the way identity is (de)constructed by way of loss. The paper adopts a Peircean semiotic approach in its character analysis of Munro s story, Maverley . The paper argues any sort of loss is directlyexposed to the way the character interprets and relates to it within his/her own context. The process of semioticization isculture- and society-oriented. The case analysis of the short story evinces how the characters for/against stances withrespect to the demands of social institutions mould their identity. The other main objective of the paper is to display the interdependence of self on Other for defining itself. Focusing separately on the three involved characters of the story, the paper shows this interdependency and the tension self undergoes when Other faces a loss
