Abstract:

Explicitation is an observed phenomenon in translation studies as Blum-Kulka (1986) considers it as the universal feature of translation. To analyze the applicability of explicitation hypothesis in translation, Cohesionis chosen as a significant mean through which explicitation was observed. The main goal of this study was toexamine cohesion shifts in translating English literary texts from English into Persian to validate Blum-Kulka s(1986) hypothesis, considering the occurrence of cohesion shifts through translation, moreover its effect on the level of explicitness in translated texts. To achieve this aim, translations of three English novels were chosen:Earnest Hemingway’s A Farewell To Arms ; translated by Najaf Dryabandari (1382), Jane Austin’s Prideand Prejudice ; translated by Nastaran Jamie(1372) and the third one, Charles Dickens’s Great Expectation ; translated by Ayaz Hadadi(1380). After the comparison of the original texts with the translations, all of the instances of explicitation, based on Halliday and Hasan’s categorization of cohesion inEnglish (1976), were identified. To examine the effects of cohesion shifts on the level of explicitness of Persiantranslated texts, cohesion shifts occurred in translation were compared with the cohesion explicitation list presented by Gumul (2006), in a descriptive comparative way. Finally the study found some categories of cohesion would lead to explicitation
