Abstract:
Wastewater produced by dairy operations in Iran is a major source of environmental threating. Hence, sever environmental regulations oblige dairy farms to uses refinement systems to remove organic pollutants from the wastewater (Azadi et al., 2015). The present study investigates the status of water per cow consumption and wastewater volume and composition in some large commercial dairy farms of Iran. Water chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) measured in dairy farm effluent. Samples were obtained from 11 large commercial dairy farms during 2016.Average of milking dairy cows was 2225±927 and water per cow consumption was 203.7± 32/9 l/d. wastewater produced by dairy farm milking system was 433.8±2407 m3/d. The BOD and COD were 2100.7±437 and 3544.6±740.9 mg/L respectively. It was notable that water consumption per dairy cow in dairy operations of Iran was very widespread and wastewater was very pollutant for environment.
