Abstract:

The effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) aspect ratio on the elastic and hardness properties of epoxy/MWNT nanocomposites were investigated using the nanoindentation technique. It was found that the increase in the aspect ratio of the nano-reinforcements increase the elastic modulus and hardness values considerably. In addition, the original Halpin-Tsai models for prediction of elastic modulus and hardness were modified to include the effective aspect ratio factor. The modified models were found to predict the experimental results much more accurately. The enhancement mechanisms were also discussed in detail.
