Abstract:

Siliconized graphite due to their excellent properties such as high refractoriness, thermal shock and oxidation resistance, higher erosion and wear resistance compared to graphite have been developed. In present study porous graphite was choosed as a starting material. Silicon infiltration into samples were carried out using vacuum high temperature furnace at above 1450 °C. Microstructure of samples were studied by optical and electron microscopy (OM & SEM). It was also investigated the mechanical and physical properties of samples before and after siliconization. Gravimetric analysis was also employed to determine the content of carbon, unreacted silicon and silicon carbide in the prepared graphite/silicon carbide composite. Results shows in the siliconization process, the graphite microstructure change significantly from single phase graphite to C/ nano SiC micron SiC Si composite. Microstructural observations indicates that nano SiC particles was formed in interface of carbon and micron SiC. Density and open porosity of siliconized samples were 2.2 g/cm3 and 5% respectively. Additionally bending and compressive strength were 50 and 160 MPa.
