The effect of Rayleigh and combined P and SV waves on the response of a typical three-dimensional concrete faced rockfill dam considering dam-foundation interaction and spatial variability of earthquake ground motion is investigated. The scaled boundary finite element method is used to obtain scattered motion and interaction forces along the canyon. Non-linear model for rockfill material is used and a contact element with Coulomb friction law is utilized at the slab-rockfill interface. The results demonstrate that Rayleigh waves induce significant internal forces in the face-slab; meanwhile the combined P and SV waves also induce relatively large opening and normal movements to vertical joints.
