Abstract:

The finite element method is used to establish consistent factors for the bearing capacity of rigid and flexible strip footings on soil which satisfies Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion, for friction angles ,φ, and dilation angles ,ψ. An isotropic elastic-plastic model is used in analyses and the bearing capacity factors are obtained for both smooth and rough footings. The commercially available code, PLAXIS, is used for the finite element analyses. Curves relating bearing capacity factors to φ are presented, and compared to previously published relations. Furthermore, the effect of nonassociativity of the soil is investigated. The results indicate a decrease in the bearing capacity factors value when the soil displays high nonassociativity.
