Abstract:

Combined impingement and film cooling on a flat plate isstudied by three-dimensional CFD simulation withconjugate heat transfer analysis. Independency of the resultsfrom mesh size is investigated, and the results are validatedwith experimental data from previous works. A noveloptimization procedure offered, which has highercompatibility with gas turbine cooling systems, compared toprevious work. In this procedure, coolant mass flow rate isminimized, subject to maximum temperature and maximumtemperature gradient smaller or equal to those of basedesign. A simplified periodic geometry generated and threegeometrical parameters of impingement holes, with higherimpact on objective function, are selected as designvariables and the other parameters are kept constant. Byalmost 250 observations during the optimization process,the solution converged to the optimum point, in which thecoolant mass flow rate is reduced by approximately 29%compared to base design.
