Abstract:
This paper examines the new DSMC approach to simulate hypersonic flow over a 70 degree blunted cone, identical to that of the Mars Pathfinder probe. This method consisting of combination between theSimplified Bernoulli Trials (SBT) collision algorithmand Transient Adaptive Sub-cell (TAS) selection procedure. The SBT already has been introduced( by Stefanov.) as a scheme that provides accurate resultswith a quite small number of particles per cells and its combination with the transient adaptive sub-cell (TAS) technique will enable SBT to have coarse grid sizes as well. In this research the Nearest Neighbor (NN) pairselection procedure of Bird DS2V code is substituted by SBT-TAS and comparison between this algorithm with NN and DAC (DSMC Analysis Code, Moss et al.) and DSMC foam (Palharini.) are made consideringappropriate test cases including hypersonic axisymmetric 70 degrees blunted cone flow. The results include some surface properties (shear stress, pressure) and flow field properties (density, velocities, overall temperature) which compare with Moss as a benchmark. The simulation of this test case demonstrates that SBT-TAS also is an efficient collision technique in treating hypersonic rarefied flows.
