Abstract:

Polylactide/Polyethylene nanoclay nanocomposites with and without compatibilizer contained two different types of nanoclay (cloisite 20A or cloisite 30B) were prepared by melt compounding. Morphology and structure development of the blend nanocomposites were examined by using of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) and melt linear viscoelastic measurements. XRD results demonstrated that the extent of melt intercalation in PLA/PE blend contained cloisite 30B was higher than that in PLA/PE blend contained cloisite 20A. FE-SEM observations showed a nodular and non-nodular morphology for blend nanocomposites with incorporation cloisite 30B and cloisite 20A, respectively. Addition of compatibilizer (PE-g-MA) into the blend nanocomposites resulted to the transfer of a part of nanoclay from PLA matrix into the PE droplets and/or interface. It was shown that the increase in melt viscosity of PLA/cloisite 20A phase along with localization of cloisite 20A in the interface and/or matrix played roles on the reduction of average dispersed domain size of PE observed in the blend nanocomposites contained 4 phr cloisite 20A.
