Abstract:

The use of nanotechnology in medicine and more specifically drug delivery has gained a potential interest to spread rapidly. Currently many particles are under investigation for drug delivery and more specifically as carriers. Interestingly pharmaceutical sciences are employing nanoparticles such as zinc oxide nanoparticles to achieve targeted drug delivery and decrease toxicity and risks of drugs. However, it has not been realized that carrier systems themselves may impose side effects to the biological systems. The biophysical aspect of zinc oxide nanoparticles side effect is being actively investigated in this study when applying these agents as medicinal agents; it should be noticed that they may bring risk towards the biological macromolecules. In this study, the interaction of zinc oxide nanoparticles with hemoglobin was studied by UV-vis spectroscopy. It was seen the absorbance intensity of hemoglobin goes up as the concentration of zinc oxide nanoparticles goes up. These data may propose that zinc oxide nanoparticles can induce the conformational changes of hemoglobin and corresponding function in a time and concentration dependent manner.
