Abstract:

Natural gas is abundant and cheap alternative fuel with capability of reducing emission levels considerably. Conventional compression ignition engines can easily be converted to a dual fuel mode of operation to use natural gas as a main fuel and diesel oil as pilot injection to initiate a combustion or as part of fuel to improve the power output where it is needed that means to change the percentage of natural gas to diesel oil. In order to examine the combustion characteristic of a heavy duty locally produced diesel engine, in DESA Company, in dual fuel mode of operation, it has been studied in detail. The main fuel would be natural gas and diesel oil as pilot injection. KIVA3-V2 has been developed for calculating the combustion processes of diesel or gasoline engines. Further suitable modifications are needed for its application to calculate the combustion of dual fuel engines. This study is carried out using a complete cycle known as open cycle and the combustion model takes the fuel mixture as one source and the interaction between fuels during the combustion has been studied, the results from developed model is compared and validated with experimental results.
