Depression and social participation of the elderly in residential home: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:
Background and Objective: To analyzed and compere depression and social participation in 2015 in elderly the elderly residential home.Materials and Methods: The present study was cross-sectional. Three questionnaires on ‘‘demographic information, social participation and GDS’’ was sent to 35 elderly of elderly residential home in one of the western provinces of Iran. . Data was analyzed with the mean, standard deviation, percent frequency the Mann-Whitney, Chi-square and Kruskal–Wallis Test.Findings: All respondents were diagnosed with depression disorder. 20% of them had severe depression, and the others had moderate depression. There was no significant correlation between total social participation and depression. But respondents who had more social participation in the subscale of participation in religious and charity activates , were significantly less suffered from depression (P<0.05). Conclusion: Social participation was estimated as relatively appropriate. All respondents showed some degrees of depression and also regarding increasing phenomenon of aging, so we will need to design and implement programs to prevent and reduce depression in elderly and increase elderly social participation.
