Abstract:

Many cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina were the target of the destruction in the 1992-1995 war. Their rehabilitation is a long-lasting process and a great challenge how to reconcile heritage conservation with social and economic progress and achieve sustainable development. The aim of the paper is to contribute to the concept of sustainable rehabilitation of historic cities in post-war recovery using a case study of the city of Jajce. The methodology of the research is based on analysis of documentation and literature, survey and assessment, as well as discussions with experts on the drafting of the management plan, local authorities and the citizens. The results cover numerous challenges to be tackled, taking into account physical and social aspects. Rehabilitation should be a process that will contribute to the improvement and modernization of cities in the spirit of the integrated heritage conservation and the approach to social cohesion. That is why it is essential to transfer the challenges into the rehabilitation strategy and identify the means to restore the lost values, enable the compatible use and connect historical parts with a wider urban picture, ease change and lessen pressures, enable social cohesion and utilize heritage as a means for mutual understanding.
