Abstract:

Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancy afflictingwomen in Iran. Breast cancer is a fatal disease but if detected early withappropriate treatment can be effective and not be fatal. One of the mostimportant diagnostic methods is the evaluation of tumor markers in breastcancer. The most widely used and well-established serological marker in breastcancer diagnostics is CA 15-3, which detects soluble forms of the mucinMUC1.The object of this survey was to evaluate levels among healthy femalesand patients and also define the relationship with estrogen and progesteronereceptor expression.Material and methods: Serum CA15-3 levels were assessed by sandwichenzyme immunoassay (ELISA) in 30 patients with breast cancer (IDC) and 30age-matched healthy controls. Only patients with confirmed histopathologicallyand untreated primary breast cancer considered before surgery. CA15-3 levelswere abnormal above 40 U/ml.Result: Elevated serum CA15-3 value was significantly observed among breastcancer patients with different stages compared to healthy females. Significantlyelevated CA15-3 serum levels were found among grade II and III of breastcancer females. Serum CA15-3 level was also higher among ER+/PR+ or ER+(61%) and it was correlated with ER receptor in tissue of breast cancer patients. Conclusion: High serum CA 15-3 level and hormonal imbalance of ER/PRappear to be one of the main cause of breast cancer which could be usefulmarker in therapeutic decision and future prognosis of breast cancer patients
