Abstract:

Makran subuction zone MSZ off shore of iran and pakistan is one of the most tsunamigenic sources in the indian Ocean. Historically, the MSZ has generated some tsunamigenic earthquakes like that of 28 november 1945 with he death more then 4000 people along the coasts of iran , pakistan, india, and oman. in this study the tsunami risk asso ciated with the MSZ is investigated. at first, a review of historical tsunamis in the indeian ocean basin is presented, end the effect of tsunami on surrounding countries iran, pakistan, india and oman is simulated using GEOWAVE, a combination of TOPICS and FUNWAVE models. in this process, the numerical modeling of tsunami is calibrated and validated using histroical observations of the 1945 makran tsunami then, a number of tsunamis each resultino from a 1945 earthquake Mw 8.1 and spaced evenly along the MSZ are simulated. the results indicate that by moving a 1945- type earthquake along the MSZ, the southern coasts of iran and pakistan will experience the largest waves with height ranging from 5 to 7 m, depending on the location of the source. the MSZ is categorized to near feild tsunami. the numerical simulation of tsunami 1945 shows that tsunami wave, reaches the south coast pakistan and iran around 18 minutes after the tsunami.
